This fall, Zax amps things up on KSFS with The Get Off, heard Wednesday afternoons from 3-5 p.m. The show focuses on the dance music from around the world, live calls and topical discussions. The podcast can be found here.
DJ Zax spins at clubs around San Francisco, including Trigger, Cockblock at Rickshaw Stop, Dragon at Club Eight, The End Up, The Café, Bootie at DNA Lounge and more. This year, he became a DJ for Energy 92.7 FM, mixing live on-air and at station events, including their annual event at Great America.

In 2008, his popular mix of Touch My Body by Mariah Carey (featuring Fatman Scoop) became the top choice of club DJs and radio jocks alike, receiving spins on WILD 94.9 in San Francisco and Q102 radio in Philadelphia and quickly became a YouTube hit with 4.5 stars rating from 58 fans and almost 34,000 views. It is also released on a special promotional remix vinyl titled, Best of Touch My Body Remixes.
His popular 2005 blend of Gwen Stefani’s Hollaback Girl with Cameo’s funk classic Word Up is featured on USA Today’s Pop Culture Blog as a “Sweet find,” and on Sterogum, which touts it “Perfect, brilliant, and infectious.”

Happy New Year! I have some exciting goodies for you in the coming weeks, but today I’m posting two of my Madonna mixes, previously unavailable on this site.
The first, “What It Feels Like for a Girl” was featured on my June 2009 Robotic Electronic DJ mix. Some of you requested it be made available individually, so here it is.

The second, “Hollywood Wondergroove” is a mashup of Madonna & Missy Elliott’s “Into the Hollywood Groove,” from their 2003 Gap campaign, over Maroon 5’s “Makes Me Wonder.” In August 2007, this mashup appeared on the Club Bootie Top 10 list.

It’s uncanny how well Mary J. Blige’s new single, “I Am,” matches the instrumentation of Rihanna’s “Disturbia.” That said, the Rihanna hit is a bit played out, so I layered Mary’s vocal on top of Nick*s fantastic “Disturbia (Old School Instrumental Remix).” The beat is reminiscent of “Show Me Love” by Robin S, and a throwback to the classic 90s house sound.
You can find out more about Nick* and download his remixes here.

Last week, I was searching for a remix of Taylor Swift’s hit song to play. Upon not finding one, I decided to make my own. Here’s the result: “You Belong With Me” over a driving beat by Redroche.

Back in June, my friend, DJ Matt Bailer and I collaborated on this mashup of Lily Allen’s song “Not Fair” and a dub by Swiss DJ Dario D’Attis, while incorporating bits and pieces of the original track provided in stems by Lily’s record label. It took awhile for us to come to an agreement on the final version, but here it is and I think it was worth the wait and effort.

Someone sent me this YouTube video of Rutgers Shockwave, an all-female acapella group performing my Madonna/Lady GaGa mashup, “Just Dance Into the Groove.” It’s kinda Glee-esque and pretty damn fun to watch.
Find out more about Rutgers Shockwave here.
If you missed my original mashup, you can find it here.

An important part of San Francisco and our lives was taken away from us this week, replaced with a cookie cutter top 40 station programmed by someone 500 miles away. Each day, that fact sinks in a little harder.
Energy was the model of how radio can be successful today, with community focus and passion; a breath of fresh air among the conglomerate-owned stations that have become the norm. Energy was about much more than music. What made Energy truly great were the people. I’m so thankful that I was able to be a small part of the station. In roughly seven months, I learned a lot, met some amazing people, and saw the inner workings of the best radio station on the planet. Love and appreciation to everyone.
The worst part is that the station replacing our Energy has not an ounce of originality. Even the new website and station logo are a clone of Stolz’s Vegas station. There is no original content on the site, which only feeds from entertainment news streams and links out to other content providers. There is no play list, only a list of the top 10 music downloads reported by Billboard, presumably the basis for the station’s programming. Seriously, what is “revolutionary” about top music downloads and 90s hits?
The loss personally affects the staff and listeners, but should matter to everyone, whether you like dance music or not. I know it’s the reality of the radio business, but to me there is something wrong when a unique, locally owned and operated station like Energy is replaced with a soulless machine.
Energy was special. It might not have had the signal strength or ratings of some bigger stations, but it had a loyal and committed audience not only in the Bay Area, but around the world. Energy was a fierce supporter of the LGBT community, drawing listeners straight and gay alike, and provided a sense of belonging for us all.
I am hopeful for the future, but I can’t help mourn the loss of Energy. There is a huge scar on the face of San Francisco, in the world of dance music, and on my heart.

You know you secretly love this Cher song. She deserves credit for popularizing the over processed Auto-Tune sound in 1998, long before T-Pain, Lil’ Wayne, Kanye West and others jumped on the bandwagon.
Here is “Believe” layered with Deadmau5’s similarly electrified track “Moar Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff.” The result: “Believe In Ghosts.”
